Their variant determines what type of protein involved in the transport of cholesterol will arise. The APOE gene may have different variants through a single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP). They determine the type of protein that is created by the action of the gene. Depending on the type of protein, it acts to varying degrees into two fractions of cholesterol and thus to their overall concentration in the body.
